I asked the boys on the corner why they risk their freedom to sell drugs on the street. Their answer was what I expected – they were not granted expungements of their felony charges. Looking for work became a waste of time when they needed to put food on the table for their families. Employers are afraid to hire them because they are afraid that they are going to reoffend. Society’s expectations for youth with criminal records are very low.
