Our laws are meant to safeguard youth from harm. Youth aren’t allowed to purchase tobacco products until they are 18 years old to protect them from the dangers of smoking, including death.  However, the law does not protect youth from being confined in adult jails where they are 36X more likely to commit suicide than in a juvenile detention center.  To truly safeguard our youth we must stop housing youth in adult jails.
